Scholarship Grants are open to young people from Wiltshire and Swindon who are under 25 and are about to start or are currently enrolled on an Undergraduate Degree course at a UK university. The grant is £1,500 per annum – with the possibility of an extra £500 for certain course and/or situations. Once awarded, the grant is given for each year of the degree so long as circumstances remain the same

Scholarship Grants are available to those who have lived within Wiltshire County or Swindon Borough for the past 2 years and are made through various funds, including the Gordon Lake Fund, the Shuker Fund, the William 'Doc 'Couch Fund and the Wiltshire Education Fund. Grants are awarded as a contribution to general living expenses, travel costs, books and course costs whilst at university.

Eligibility

  • Be resident for at least two years* in Wiltshire or Swindon AND
  • Be in receipt of means-tested benefits or parents, carers or guardians be in receipt of means-tested benefits AND
  • Be aged between 17 – 24 years at the time of the application AND
  • Have or will take up any Student Loans available AND
  • Be applying for support for First Degree/Undergraduate Degree (including an integrated masters course)

* We will consider applications if you have lived here less than 2 years, but it does depend on circumstances. Complete the Expression of Interest and we will be in touch to clarify

Use of Grant

  • Grants can only be used to support higher education needs.
  • Grants are awarded as a contribution to general living expenses, travel costs, books and course costs whilst at university
  • You will be requested to complete monitoring covering grant expenditure and progression on your course

The grants cannot be used for

  • Postgraduate – Masters / PHD courses
  • Money that has already been spent
  • The promotion of party political or religious causes
  • Equipment or expenses which should be provided by someone else
  • Sponsorship costs

The final decisions are made in July. An interview is part of the process.

Vocational Grants

Vocational Grants are open to individuals aged between 16 and 25, who have lived within Wiltshire County or Swindon Borough for at least the last 2 years and who, or their parents/carers, are in receipt of means-tested benefits.

Grants are also available for 14 and 15 year olds if they have been resident for at least 5 years in Wiltshire County or Swindon Borough

Grants can be awarded for course related costs and equipment, travel and field trips or other costs related to a vocational course at college, 6th form or other education provider; training through an apprenticeship or to support a new business start-up

  We are particularly keen to fund ‘tools of the trade' or vocational training

Applications are for amounts under £1,000. Applications can be made throughout the year and decisions are made by a panel.

Eligibility

  • Be resident for at least two years in Wiltshire or Swindon (or 5 years if aged 14 or 15) AND
  • Receive means-tested benefits or parents, carers or guardians be in receipt of means-tested benefits AND
  • Be aged between 14 -25 (the grant must be spent before the applicant reaches their 26th birthday) AND
  • Have investigated and been declined for other funding (such as College hardship fund, school funds) AND
  • Be able to provide evidence of acceptance for their course or training

Use of Grant

  • Grants can only be used to support educational or training needs.
  • Examples include the full costs or a contribution towards:
  • Fees for particular courses and trips i.e. educational trips or excursions
  • Equipment (including specially adapted equipment for those with disabilities, tools for training apprenticeships, equipment for sports, IT, music or other extra-curricular activities)
  • Books and other resources
  • Payments for out of school activities during term time and holidays
  • For early years children, support costs for activities that help their transition into mainstream education

The grants cannot be used for

  • School fees
  • Money that has already been spent
  • The promotion of party political or religious purposes

Personal Support Grants

Personal Support Grants are open to individuals of any age up to 25 who have a disability or additional learning need, or who have been in the care of the local authority (Wiltshire or Swindon). Applicants must have lived within Wiltshire County or Swindon Borough for the past 2 years, and are themselves or their parents/carers in receipt of means-tested benefits and need financial support for costs to support their education.

Applications are for amounts under £1,000. Applications can be made throughout the year and decisions are made by a panel.

Eligibility

  • Be resident for at least two years in Wiltshire or Swindon AND
  • Receive means-tested benefits or parents, carers be in receipt of means-tested benefits AND
  • Be aged between 0 and 25 AND
  • Be or have been in the care of Wiltshire County Council or Swindon Borough Council OR
  • Be individuals who require additional support because of long term health needs or a disability AND
  • Have investigated and been declined for other funding (such as College hardship fund, school funds)AND

Use of grant

  • Grants can only be used to support educational or training needs.
  • Examples include the full costs or a contribution towards:
  • Fees for particular courses and trips i.e. educational trips or excursions
  • Equipment (including specially adapted equipment for those with disabilities, tools for training apprenticeships, equipment for sports, IT, music or other extra-curricular activities)
